Blue-Line Dawg Puzzles

Welcome to Blue-Line Dawg Puzzles, a division of TexasMattings.com!

Mostly, we focus on Police K9 and Dog Sport (Schutzhund, Mondio Ring, French Ring, PSA) related breeds but I've been known to branch out on occasion!

Take the shape of your favorite dog (or cat, or horse, or cow, or ferret!) and spell out the breed , or your pet's name or even your company!

Scroll down to view the various breeds that I've done puzzles of, and at the very bottom is the K-9 Falko Memorial section which shows fallen K-9s and the puzzles of them which I donate to handlers and their families.

About halfway down the page, you'll find the "Tater Project", which includes my two latest offerings Pictured-Pups and Pup-Portraits...I'd love to hear what you think of them!

Of course, when you first start something like this, you naturally start close to home and I did the same thing.  My first puzzles were of the wife's Scottish Terrier, our daughter's Cairn Terrier and our son's Boxer using commercially available patterns.

ABBY the Scottish Terrier

(unfinished red oak)      (painted black...which I won't do anymore because it loses all definition)

MIRY the Cairn Terrier

(unfinished red oak)

BRUNO the Boxer

(unfinished red oak)                 (accented in white - still unfinished)     (accented white & finished in early American)

But while the available breed patterns for most breeds are fine, some breeds show a definite difference in build, etc, between the working bloodlines and show bloodlines.

POLICE K-9 Belgian Malinois on mound with base

(red oak finished with honey pecan polyurethane gloss over dark cherry)

(This was done using a Woodimals pattern from Jim Sweet.)

The above Belgian Malinois struck most folks I showed it to as an example of a show lines Malinois and folks can buy any number of different types of statuary and such of their show dogs in the picture perfect show dog stance, etc...but how many crafts target WORKING dogs?

Well, I don't know either, but there doesn't seem to be that many of us, and you've stumbled across one!

The TATER Project

First, I started with a standard Bulldog design, but made it a little larger, approx. 8"x10"

Poplar with a clear stain.

Next, I tried something different which I'd been considering.  Something I call Pictured-Pups!

The photo was 8"x10" when we began, the coke can is for size reference.  All one piece with the photo then decouppaged to the wood.

Finally, I'd been wanting to try my hand at scroll-sawing portraits and this project helped me work up the nerve!

So here's my very first Pup-Portrait

The pattern was created by Tim Watts.  The portrait is done on 1/8" oak ply cut to fit a standard 11"x14" frame.  Since Ms Tater's primary color is white, I white-wash stained the wood and backed it with a faux-leather mat that closely matched Tater's other color seen above!

All of these items are on display in a show-house in Cincinnatti, Ohio decorated by Tater's owner and the company she works for!

Shih Tzu (commercial design)

Shih Tzu brothers - YAO and MING

(poplar - Golden Pine and Ipswich Pine)

Non-Dog Puzzles

Bass Fisherman

Fisherman spells Lew vs. Ray...two very competitive fishermen!

(Poplar stained with Early American)

Horse and Rider - CHEYENNE

(Poplar - Sedona Red horse, Early American saddle and Ipswich Pine rider)

TOWN & COUNTRY FEED

First in a line of Corporate Puzzles!

Great for Feed Stores, Pet Stores, Veterinary Offices, Groomers, etc!

I'll be adding a base to this soon to keep them all together.

(Australian Shepherd dog is red oak/ Angus, horse and rider are poplar - Black Walnut Danish oil/ natural Danish oil/ Sedona Red stains)

Standard size is whatever will fit on an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper, but I usually do smaller breeds on a half-sheet and medium-sized breeds on a 3/4 sheet.

You'll notice that some designs are free-standing while others have an integral mound, both are priced the same.  Standard price is $20 with your choice of stain.

Painting is contracted out to my teenage daughter and is $5 extra.

A base can be added to any design for $5 more.  Please specify Regular base (rounded all 4 sides) or Trophy base (rounded 3 sides and angled 30 degrees to allow mounting of engraved plate on front).

A mound can be added to any design that does not incorporate one for an additional $5.

And titles, or perhaps the kennel name if its not too long, can be cut into the mound for an additional $10.

New Items

Pictured-Pups, as seen in the Tater Project above, start at $35 and include the base and stain of your choice.  Please e-mail several pictures and we will then come to an agreement on which one to use.

Pup-Portraits, as seen in the Tater Project above, start at $45 (unframed) and include the stain and matting backer of your choice.  Additional subjects are $10 and the addition of names or captions is also $10.  Again, please e-mail several pictures and we will then come to an agreement on which one to use.

    K-9 Falko Memorial Puzzle Donations

If you know of a K-9 which has passed over the bridge, for whatever reason since July, 2007 and for as long as I am able to make these puzzles, please contact me with the breed/name info so that I can provide them with a memorial.  I know it's not much, and I wish I could do more, but it makes me feel better.

I have well over a dozen patterns of my own drawn up and waiting for time to be cut...  I'm over-flowing with ideas, but if you have a special request, don't let that stop you from -ing me!  I promise to drop the other ones in favor of yours...at least for a little while! :-)  And don't forget to check out my Friends' links to find something you can't live without!
